Un faro es una torre, situada normalmente cerca de la costa, que sirve para guiar con su luz a los barcos en las rutas de navegación y se conoce su existencia desde hace mas de 2000 años. Cada faro tiene una historia que contar, algunos están rodeados de un aura de misterio, romanticismo o aventura que les hace únicos y de entre ellos traemos siete que nos han fascinado de manera especial.
Esta es una de las fotos mas conocidas de Jean Guichard con la que quedó finalista del World Press Photo de 1989. El día en que la tomó, un gran temporal golpeaba la costa y Jean se acercó con el helicoptero de su equipo al faro La Jument, cerca de la isla de Ouessant. El farero del Jument, Theodore Malgorne, estaba muy asustado ese día ya que el temporal era de los peores que había visto, las olas habían destrozado las ventanas del primer piso y habían inundado el sotano. La situación era muy peligrosa y había llamado a la guardia costera para que le sacaran de allí. Por eso, al escuchar el helicoptero de Jean pensó que eran los servicios de rescate y bajó corriendo, abrió la puerta del faro y a punto estuvo de morir tragado por la ola que rompía contra el faro. En ese instante, Jean Guichard tomo su serie famosa de fotografías y Malgorne por puro instinto volvió a meterse dentro con lo que salvó su vida.
La isla de Ouessant, al noroeste de Francia, es una zona conocida por los marineros por ser muy escarpada y peligrosa con mal tiempo casi todo el año. En junio de 1896, el naufragio del barco de vapor “Castillo de Drummond” provocó la muerte de cerca de 250 personas. Para hacer una navegación mas segura se construyó el faro La Jument, en 1904, sobre una roca del mismo nombre a 300 metros de la isla.
Kjeungskjaer es un faro solitario considerado uno de los mas bellos de Noruega y el mas representativo. Se encuentra próximo a la ciudad de Trondheim, a 3 grados por debajo del Círculo Polar Artico y fue construido en 1880. Hoy en día su funcionamiento es automático, pero antiguamente era servido por los fareros que vivían allí. El último farero que lo habitó, lo hizo junto a su mujer y sus cinco hijos que realizaron sus estudios en el mismo faro.
La escritora Ana Alcolea, ganadora del premio Anaya de literatura juvenil 2011 con su novela “La noche mas oscura”, se inspiró en el faro Kjeungskjaer para escribirla. En su novela, cuenta una historia basada en hechos reales donde la protagonista, que habita este faro, vive una serie de acontecimientos en los que se entremezclan desde extrañas apariciones de un antiguo farero en sus sueños, hasta un campo de prisioneros rusos que los nazis instalaron en la costa noruega, durante la segunda Guerra Mundial, en una secuencia con la que compone una hermosa y turbadora novela de aventuras en medio de un mar surcado de interrogantes y peligros.
El faro Ar-men lleva el nombre de la roca sobre la que se erigió. Por las considerables dificultades para su construcción, el peligro que representó para los obreros y el trabajo estresante que tenían que soportar los guardianes del faro, se convirtió en un faro legendario y fue apodado por los fareros como “el infierno de los infiernos”. Su construcción comienza en 1867 y tardaron 14 años en levantar el faro, sobre una roca que en marea baja, solo emerge 1.5 metros sobre el agua. Los obreros tuvieron que trabajar en condiciones durísimas, tumbados al principio sobre la roca para evitar ser barridos por las olas y poder realizar los primeros agujeros donde se integraría la base del faro. Tardaron 2 años para terminar 55 hoyos y una ranura circular excavados en la roca para sustentar la base de mampostería, y las primeras piedras no se pusieron hasta mediados del año 1869, teniendo que repetir trabajos con frecuencia ya que las tormentas destruían o dañaban lo realizado el día anterior. Un barco estaba siempre vigilante para rescatar a los obreros que eran arrojados al mar por el oleaje. Sorprendentemente, hubo pocos accidentes graves pero los incidentes fueron continuos. Todas estas peripecias se prolongaron hasta el año 1881, cuando terminó la construcción y el faro Ar-Men se iluminó por primera vez.
Antes de la automatización, la azarosa regularidad de los relevos de los fareros, que dependían del estado de la mar, prolongaba indefinidamente algunas estancias. Así, en 1923, el farero Fouquet permaneció encerrado 101 días en medio del temporal, aislado y sin provisiones. Cuando un farero no estaba de guardia gozaba de plena libertad, aunque disponían de pocas distracciones, y uno de las mayores aficiones era la de la cocina (son famosas algunas recetas de los fareros de Ar-men), también la pesca, la lectura y la radio. La monotonía de la vida cotidiana se rompía con frecuencia por todo tipo de eventos inesperados. Los dias de tormenta no se podía abrir ninguna ventana y era imposible permanecer en la galería superior, debido a la violencia de las olas y la fuerza del viento. Los golpes de las grandes olas sacudían todo el edificio y solían derribar todo lo que colgaba de las paredes, haciendo estos periodos realmente insoportables para los fareros. Los últimos guardianes del faro fueron Daniel Treanton y Michel Le Ru que terminaron su servicio en abril de 1990, fecha a partir de la que el faro fue automatizado. Una vez al año, buzos especializados inspeccionan la base del faro.
El faro de Porkkala fue construido en 1920 para reemplazar el antiguo faro de Rönnskär, lo que no fue una tarea facil por las continuas tormentas que barren la zona y que la hacían inaccesible por largos periodos de tiempo, dejando a los obreros aislados y casi sin recursos en contadas ocasiones. El faro se construyó en 4 plantas con un sotano reforzado como una fortaleza con paredes ligeramente inclinadas para resistir el asalto de las olas. Hasta tres familias vivían en el faro y contaban con todas las comodidades, sauna incluida. Despues de la guerra y hasta 1956 fue arrendado por los soviéticos que al retirarse dejaron las estancias en condiciones inhabitables.
El faro se automatizó y desde entonces permanece aislado y solitario en medio de la nada, con la visita ocasional de algunas focas grises que pueblan la zona y vienen a descansar sobre las rocas de Kallbada.
El faro del fin del mundo está situado frente a la Pointe des Minimes en La Rochelle, Francia. Es una réplica idéntica del “Faro San Juan de Salvamento” situado sobre un promontorio rocoso en Staten Island, en la Patagonia Argentina, que erigido en 1884 en Tierra del Fuego, por la división expedicionaria del Atlántico Sur, para evitar que las naves siguieran naufragando víctimas de las feroces tormentas y las rocas de la zona, fue guía de una gran cantidad de barcos que, a partir de su emplazamiento, vieron facilitado su camino hacia el Océano Pacífico. Era la única luz que tenían los navegantes en el mar austral y también la última antes de lo desconocido.
Debido a las condiciones extremas y a la construcción de otro faro en un nuevo emplazamiento, fue abandonado en 1902 y finalmente destruido por las inclemencias del tiempo. Los restos de este faro, que inspiró a Julio Verne para su novela “El faro del fin del mundo”, fueron descubiertos por el deportista y aventurero André Bronner que decide hacer la reconstrucción en 1994. Para ello, crea en La Rochelle, la “Asociación del Faro del Fin del Mundo” y se marca el objetivo de hacer 2 réplicas de este faro, una en su ubicación original y la otra en La Rochelle. Con la ayuda de la Armada Argentina logra reconstruirlo en la Patagonia en 1998 y mas adelante, en el año 2000, con el apoyo económico de instituciones francesas en la costa de Rochelle, construido sobre pilotes. Para construir las dos réplicas se basaron en la única fotografía existente del Faro, tomada por la expedición científica belga de Adrian De Gerlache en 1898. El faro original estaba construido en madera y la proyección de luz era producida por varias lámparas de petróleo a través de cristales de gran tamaño, con un alcance de 26 kilometros.
En 1893, se celebra la Exposición Colombina en Chicago y la ciudad, orgullosa de mostrarse al mundo, hizo muchas mejoras en el puerto preparándose para una masiva afluencia de viajeros. Entre otras cosas, se construye el Faro del puerto de Chicago dotándolo con una impresionante lente Fresnel de tercer orden con paneles blancos y rojos en alternancia, galardonada con el primer premio en la feria de Paris. Actualmente, la lente Fresnel se encuentra en exhibición en el Cabrillo National Monument de California. En 1919, el faro se traslada a su actual emplazamiento, al final de la escollera del puerto exterior.
Chicago Harbor Lighthouse fue automatizado en 1979 e inscrito en el Registro Nacional de Lugares Históricos en 1984, para más tarde, en el año 2003, ser designado como un lugar de referencia de la ciudad de Chicago. Hoy en día, el Faro del puerto de Chicago sigue en funcionamiento con su luz roja parpadeante ayudando a la navegación de las embarcaciones marítimas pero, por desgracia, no está abierto al público.
Thomas Point Shoal es un histórico faro, de forma hexagonal y construido en madera. ubicado en la Bahía de Chesapeake en la costa este de los Estados Unidos, el único en la Bahía que se encuentra en su sitio original y el más reconocido de Maryland. Su historia se remonta a 1825, año en el que se construye inicialmente en piedra pero al ser objeto de una continua erosión fué sustituido en 1875, levantado sobre pilones entrecruzados. En 1877, el faro cayó a causa del hielo y fue reconstruido, esta vez con pilones adicionales y colocando una escollera a su alrededor para protegerlo.
En los primeros años, tres fareros atendían el mantenimiento y la supervisión del faro para reducirse, a principios de la década de 1880, a dos. Cada farero pasaba tres semanas en el faro antes de poder pasar una semana en tierra. El faro pasó a ser automático en el año 1986, siendo el último de la Bahía de Chesapeake en hacerlo. En 1975 fue inscrito en el Registro Nacional de Lugares Históricos y en 1999 fue designado como Monumento Histórico Nacional, el más alto reconocimiento que una estructura histórica puede recibir, convirtiéndose en uno de los nueve faros en todo el país con esta designación.
