PJ Harvey gana prestigioso premio Mercury Prize 2011

El Barclaycard Mercury Prize es un premio de carácter anual que se entrega al mejor disco salido del Reino Unido e Irlanda. Existe desde 1992 y ha premiado a artistas como Portishead, Primal Scream, Pulp y Elbow, entre otros. Este galardón es reconocido mundialmente y los artistas nuevos que han triunfado en esa ceremonia, tienen un importante despegue después, como fue el caso de Arctic Monkeys quienes ganaron el premio en 2006 con su disco debut.

Este año los nominados tenían un nivel destacado, ya que competían por el galardón grupos como Elbow y Metronomy, solistas como Adele y PJ Harvey, además de un grupo de bandas emergentes. La ganadora fue la inglesa Polly Jean Harvey, más conocida como PJ Harvey, quién se llevó el trofeo gracias a su excelente disco “Let England Shake”.

En la gala, celebrada la noche del martes en Londres, la cantante recibió el premio y el dinero (cerca de US$ 30 mil) que acompaña esa distinción al mejor álbum del año. Harvey en su discurso comentó que “Antes que nada me gustaría decir gracias por este premio y por el reconocimiento a mi trabajo en este disco. De hecho está muy bien estar aquí. La otra vez estaba en Washington viendo desde la ventana del hotel cómo ardía el Pentágono, así que sí, es bueno estar aquí. Mucho ha pasado desde entonces. Este disco me llevó mucho tiempo escribirlo. Fue muy importante para mí, quería hacer algo con significado no solo para mí, sino también para los demás, con la intención de crear algo que perdure en el tiempo”.

Esta es la segunda vez que Harvey se lleva un Mercury Prize. En 2001 lo ganó con su disco “Stories from the City, Stories from the Sea”, lo cual explica parte de su discurso, en el que hace referencia a que en la anterior ocasión que obtuvo el galardón, acababan de producirse los atentados a las Torres Gemelas y el Pentágono estadounidense.
