Nuestro viaje hacia el origen de “Sheena is a Punk Rocker”, canción compuesta por Joey Ramone, comienza el 22 de Junio del año 1856, día del nacimiento de Sir Henry Rider Haggard, escritor ingles de novelas de aventuras ambientadas en lugares exóticos, como por ejemplo, África, y fundador del genero literario “Mundo Perdido”.

Haggard es reconocido por ser el autor de famosas novelas de aventura, tales como, Las Minas del Rey Salomón, su secuela Allan Quatermain, She y su secuela Ayesha. Las Minas del Rey Salomón es considerada como la primera obra del genero literario “Mundo Perdido”.

Ahora bien, para seguir en nuestro camino para desengranar el origen de la canción “Sheena is a Punk Rocker”, nos detendremos en la novela escrita por Haggard, publicada en el año 1887, She, considerada como uno de los clásicos de la literatura imaginativa, con 83 millones de copias vendidas al año 1965, es uno de los libros mas vendidos de todos los tiempos.

She es una historia en primera persona, que narra las aventuras de Horace Holly y su pupilo Leo Vincey en un reino perdido de África. Ahí, ellos encuentran una raza primitiva de nativos y a su misteriosa reina blanca, Ayesha, la cual reina bajo el poderoso titulo de “She”.

Hasta aquí, ya tenemos el “She” de “Sheena”, ahora, como continua esta historia?

SHEENA, REINA DE LA JUNGLA

Nuestro viaje continua, ya no en Inglaterra, sino que en Brooklyn, New York, lugar donde nació, en 1917, William Erwin Eisner, escritor y artista norteamericano de comics. Eisner es considerado como uno de los más importantes contribuyentes al desarrollo del comic mundial.

La historia continua en el año 1937, cuando Eisner junto a Jerry Iger (su socio), inspirados por el libro de H. Rider Haggard, SHE, del cual ya les hablamos, crearon el comic de ficción llamado, Sheena, Reina de la Jungla, publicado originalmente por Fiction House.

La contraparte femenina de Tarzán, posee ciertas similitudes con el Rey de la Jungla, tales como que ambos poseen la habilidad de comunicarse con los animales salvajes, ambos eran huérfanos que crecieron y aprendieron a como sobrevivir en la jungla. Además podemos agregar que, Sheena era experta en la lucha con cuchillos, lanzas, arco y flecha. Su habilidad principal era sorprender a sus oponentes.

Sheena fue el primer comic en la historia en tener como protagonista a una mujer.

“Sheena is a Punk Rocker”, canción compuesta por Jeffry Ross Hyman (Joey Ramone), inspirado por el popular comic norteamericano Sheena, Reina de la Jungla, el cual era leido por el durante su infancia y parte de su juventud, hizo su primera aparición en su tercer álbum, Rocket to Russia, en el año 1977, reapareciendo posteriormente en las reediciones de su segundo álbum, Leave Home.
